The Melbourne standard

The team building activity Melbourne teams keep coming back to

Search team building activities Melbourne and most results are a trivia night, a cooking class or a round of lawn bowls. An escape room gives every person on the team an actual role to play, which is why it has become one of the most requested types of corporate team building Melbourne has to offer. Whether you are comparing team building ideas Melbourne wide or looking specifically for indoor team building activities that work regardless of weather, this is where most groups land first.

We also run plenty of smaller sessions that are not really "corporate" at all: department catch-ups, end-of-year drinks with a game attached, or just a group activity Melbourne teams book for the sake of doing something together. If you are after team bonding activities Melbourne wide, or your group falls somewhere between a team bonding activity and a big offsite, get in touch and we will point you at the right size session.

Why it works

Why escape rooms work for teams

The skills that surface during a session, including delegation, decision-making under pressure and clear communication, map directly to the competencies most workplace team building programmes are designed to develop. The difference is that your team is having fun while they do it. Compared to most other team bonding activities, an escape room also gives quieter team members a genuine way to contribute, which is often where the real value sits for teams still getting to know each other.

Communication

Rooms cannot be solved without clear, fast communication, which strengthens how your team shares information back at work.

Problem-solving

Teams think creatively and work complex puzzles under time pressure, sharpening problem-solving as a group.

Leadership and roles

People naturally take on roles, so employees practise leadership, delegation and collaboration in a low-stakes setting.

Morale and engagement

A memorable shared win lifts morale and keeps teams motivated and connected long after the event.

Backed by research

The case for it is measured, not just claimed

Most team building claims are marketing. This one sits in the peer-reviewed literature, and we have laid out the studies in full.

62 teamsshowed a statistically significant rise in group cohesion, measured before and after a single escape room
2,434 peopleacross pooled studies reporting gains in teamwork and communication
Decadesof team science point to the same drivers of performance: trust and cohesion

A peer-reviewed study recorded a statistically significant rise in team cohesion after a single escape room, across 62 real teams.

Packages

Two ways to run your day

Standard Team Session

$300 per room
Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm • Minimum 2 rooms

All rooms run at the same time, so your whole team starts and finishes together. Total time on site is around 90 minutes: arrival and welcome, a briefing from your Game Master, 60 minutes in the room, and a debrief with photos afterwards.

Works for groups of 6 to 36 depending on venue.

Half-Day Experience

$300 per room
Minimum 4 rooms across 2 sessions • Minimum spend $1,200

Two windows: morning 9:30am to 1:00pm (sessions at 10:00 and 12:00) or afternoon 1:30pm to 5:00pm (sessions at 2:00 and 4:00). Your team arrives 30 minutes early for a welcome briefing, plays the first rooms, breaks for a structured debrief, then swaps into different rooms for a second session. Same teams, new challenge.

The morning session wraps at 1pm, leaving time for lunch nearby.

South Yarra holds up to 36 across six rooms, St Kilda up to 24 across four, and Hawthorn and Chadstone up to 18 across three. Larger groups can run across multiple venues.

Common questions

What teams ask before booking

Is an escape room a good team building activity?

Yes. It puts communication, delegation and problem-solving under mild time pressure in a way most office-based team building activities cannot replicate. See the research behind it on our team building research page.

Do you run indoor team building activities?

All 16 rooms are fully indoors across our four venues, so weather is never a factor. It is one of the more reliable indoor team building activities in Melbourne for exactly that reason.

What group activities in Melbourne CBD work for larger teams?

South Yarra and St Kilda are a short trip from the CBD and hold the most rooms, six and four respectively, so they suit larger group bookings well. For anything over 36 people we run split sessions or use two venues on the same day.

How is this different from a trivia night or other team bonding activities?

Trivia rewards people who already know the answers. An escape room rewards teams that communicate well under pressure, so it tends to surface different strengths and works well as a team bonding activity for mixed-seniority groups.

Can we combine team building with a social event?

Yes, plenty of groups play first and head to a nearby venue for food and drinks afterwards. Ask us when you enquire and we can suggest somewhere that fits your group size.

What is the minimum and maximum group size?

Two rooms is our minimum for a corporate booking. On the upper end we regularly run groups of 36 or more across a single venue, and larger than that across two venues on the same day.

The two windows Australian teams actually book in

Team building gets talked about as though it happens evenly across the year. It does not. In Australia it clusters into two windows for two completely different reasons, and knowing which one you are in changes how far ahead you need to book and who is signing off.

End of financial year

May and June

The financial year closes on 30 June, and any training, development or team budget that has not been spent by then generally does not carry. So May and June bring a run of bookings that are less about a party and more about using an allocation before it disappears.

These are usually daytime weekday sessions, often smaller and more senior, and frequently need a quote and a purchase order rather than a card at the counter. It is also the middle of a Melbourne winter, which is the point of the year when an entirely indoor activity stops being a nice idea and starts being the only one.

Practical note: if the spend has to land in this financial year, the invoice date matters more than the play date. Tell us and we will work backwards from that.

End of calendar year

November and December

The Christmas party window, and a different job entirely. Bigger groups, mixed seniority, usually an evening, and the person organising it has been handed the task rather than volunteering for it.

The first three weeks of December carry almost all of it, and Thursday and Friday evenings go first. A group of twenty at a specific venue on a specific evening is a September or October booking, not a late November one.

Full detail on the Christmas party page, including capacity by venue and what books out when.

Everything in between is quieter and much easier to schedule, which is worth knowing if your team has flexibility. A February or August session gets you the venue and the time you actually wanted.

Teams spread across Melbourne

The complaint that kills more corporate bookings than cost is travel. If half the team is in the eastern suburbs and the activity is in the CBD, the people who have to cross the city quietly decide not to come, and the organiser finds out on the day.

Four venues gives you three ways around that.

SituationWhat to do
Team clustered in one part of the cityPick the closest venue. South Yarra for the CBD and inner south, Hawthorn for the inner and middle east, St Kilda for bayside, Chadstone for the south east with parking on site.
Team genuinely spread outRun the same session at two venues at the same time and compare results afterwards. It works better than it sounds, because the competition is the point rather than the room.
Team too large for one venueBack-to-back waves at South Yarra, or a split across two venues on the same afternoon.

How many can play at once

VenueRoomsSimultaneousNotes
South Yarra636Our flagship, two minutes from the station, takes the largest groups
St Kilda424Every scare tier in one building, good for mixed appetite
Hawthorn318On the Glenferrie strip, dinner afterwards without moving the car
Chadstone314Parking on site. Two rooms cap at four players

Beyond 36 in one place we run waves, with the second group arriving as the first finishes. Email enquiries@rushescapegame.com.au with numbers and a date and we will build the schedule.

Nobody has to be frightened

Worth saying explicitly on a corporate page, because it is the objection that stops people booking and it is easily answered.

Eight of our sixteen rooms are rated Not scary, the lowest tier on our scare scale: no horror content, no darkness used to unsettle anyone, nothing that jumps out. There are no live actors in any of our rooms at any time of year.

If part of the team actively wants a fright, book them into a horror room in the same time slot while everyone else does something else. Every venue spans multiple tiers, so the split costs you nothing and both groups finish at the same moment with better stories than they would have had in one room.

Questions from the person organising it

We need to spend the budget before 30 June. How late can we book?

Later than you would think, because EOFY sessions are usually smaller and weekday daytime, which is our quietest window. Tell us if the invoice has to fall in this financial year and we will work back from that date rather than the play date.

Can you invoice us, and do you take purchase orders?

Yes to both. Details are in the procurement section above.

Half the team is in the east and half is in the bayside suburbs.

Run it at two venues at the same time and compare escape times. You lose nothing and you gain a genuine competition, which is more memorable than the room either group played.

What if someone does not want to do it at all?

A non-scary room removes most of that objection. For the rest, groups of two to six per room means somebody can sit with the games master and watch on the monitor, which people do, and they usually end up shouting advice through the door.

When is the quietest time to book?

Anything outside May and June or November and December. February through April and July through October you can generally have the venue and the time you actually wanted.
