When to come, and what is on around St Kilda
St Kilda runs hot from late summer into autumn, and some of Melbourne's biggest events land on our doorstep. The Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park in March and the St Kilda Festival in February both draw huge crowds a few minutes away, and Midsumma Pride March runs along the foreshore. The rooms are the cool, quiet flip side of a big beach day, and they run rain or shine. Book early for event weekends and the summer holidays.
Make a day of it in St Kilda
You are a short walk from some of Melbourne's best-known bayside spots, so it is easy to build the rooms into a full day or night out:

Frequently asked questions
- How long does an escape room take?
- Each room runs for 60 minutes. Allow about 90 minutes on site in total for arrival, your briefing, the game and a quick photo debrief at the end.
- How many players can play?
- Our rooms suit groups of 2 to 6. Larger groups can split across rooms and compete, just ask.
- Do we need any experience?
- None at all. Every room comes with a briefing, and you are never actually locked in. Most first-timers are hooked within ten minutes.
- Is it scary?
- It depends on the room. We have everything from family-friendly adventures to genuine horror. Each room shows its difficulty and how scary it is above.
- Which is the scariest room at St Kilda?
- The Conjoining is our scariest and hardest room, a demonic paranormal horror recommended for ages 16 and up. The Last of Them is an intense post-apocalyptic survival room, Alice in Wonderland is spooky rather than scary, and Treasure Island has no scares at all.
- Which room is best for kids and families?
- Treasure Island. It is a fun, all-ages pirate treasure hunt with no scares, and one of our most popular choices for kids' birthdays.
- Can children play?
- Yes. Players under 16 are welcome with a participating adult in the room.
- Where are you and where do we park?
- Level 1, 100 Barkly Street, St Kilda VIC 3182. We are on the first floor, upstairs, in the heart of St Kilda. There is paid street parking on Barkly Street and the surrounding streets.
Which room should you book at St Kilda?
Four rooms, and they sit at four different points on our scare scale. That is not an accident. St Kilda is the venue built so a group who cannot agree does not have to.
We rate every room on two separate scales, because how hard a room is and how frightening it is are different things. Here is the venue on both.
| Room | Scare | Difficulty | Book it if |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Conjoining | Terrifying | 4 / 5 | You want a demonic haunting with no gore. Scariest and hardest room here. 16 and over. |
| The Last of Them | Intense | 4 / 5 | You want post-apocalyptic tension and a hard puzzle without being frightened. |
| Alice in Wonderland | Spooky | 3 / 5 | You want atmosphere and strangeness rather than fear. All ages with an adult. |
| Treasure Island | Not scary | 3 / 5 | It is a first escape room, a kids birthday, or a family group. Nothing frightening at all. |
The short version. Never done one: Treasure Island. Kids: Treasure Island, or Alice in Wonderland from around eight. Want tension without fear: The Last of Them. Want to be properly scared: The Conjoining.
The mixed-group venue
One building holding a Terrifying room, an Intense one and two that a child can play is a genuinely unusual thing, and it solves the most common problem in escape room booking.
Somebody in the group will not do horror. Somebody else has come specifically for it. In most venues that is a negotiation where one side gives in and has a worse time. Here you book two rooms in the same time slot, everybody plays at once, and the group reconvenes afterwards with completely different stories about the same hour. The person who did the pirate ship and the person who did the demonic haunting have more to talk about than two people who did the same room, not less.
The full range in one building is also why this is a good venue for a first escape room. If the group enjoys it, the next tier up is in the same place next time.
Booking for a group
Each room takes two to six players, so up to 24 people can play at the same time across the four rooms.
Up to 12: two rooms, same start time. Pick different tiers if the group is mixed.
12 to 18: three rooms simultaneously.
18 to 24: all four rooms at once. Worth booking well ahead on a weekend.
More than 24: email enquiries@rushescapegame.com.au and we will look at back-to-back sessions or splitting across venues.
A practical note: four to six players in a room is a better hour than two or three for most groups. A six-player room with two people in it is a much harder game. If you are a pair who want a genuine challenge, our two rooms built specifically for small teams are at Chadstone.
Parties, celebrations and work groups
Kids birthdays. Treasure Island is the room with nothing frightening in it, from around six or seven. For a party with a wider age spread, run Alice in Wonderland alongside it for the older kids. With Luna Park and the beach around the corner, this is the venue to build a whole afternoon around. See the kids birthday page.
Corporate and team building. The Last of Them is the strongest work booking here. The scarcity logic of a post-apocalyptic world rewards groups who share what they find rather than racing each other, the atmosphere raises the stakes without frightening anyone, and it works for a team who do not all know each other yet. Formats and rates are on the team building page.
Hens, bucks and milestones. The full-range room mix means the group splits by appetite rather than by argument, and Acland Street and Fitzroy Street are both a short walk for whatever happens next. See hens, bucks and milestone celebrations.
Schools. Four rooms takes a class in two waves. Pricing, formats and compliance paperwork are on the school excursions page.
Buying for someone else? A gift voucher lets them pick their own tier, which matters more here than anywhere given the spread.
Accessibility, and what to tell us
Rush St Kilda is on the first floor at 100 Barkly Street. If stairs are a problem, call us on 03 9972 6286 before you book and we will tell you honestly what is possible, including when the answer is that another venue would suit you better. We would rather have that conversation now than at check-in.
Inside the rooms, tell us at check-in or beforehand if it will affect which room you pick. We can brief a player on what is coming, keep the lights higher, drop the volume, or have your games master stay in closer contact through the game.
Nothing depends on English fluency. Puzzles are built on symbols, patterns, objects, numbers and physical logic rather than reading and wordplay, in all sixteen rooms.
No live actors, anywhere. Not in one of our rooms, at any venue, in any season including Halloween. Nothing chases you, nothing touches you, and you are never locked in. The door is unlocked in every room and you can step out at any second, which is worth knowing before you rule out The Conjoining.
Companion Card holders play free, and we have adapted rooms for Deaf and Auslan groups, blind and low vision players and players with intellectual disabilities since 2016. Email stkilda@rushescapegame.com.au with anything you want to check first.
Where we draw from
Rush St Kilda is at Level 1, 100 Barkly Street, a few minutes from Luna Park, the Esplanade and the foreshore, and simple to reach on the tram from the city.
Most of our bookings here come from St Kilda, Elwood, Balaclava, Elsternwick, Ripponlea, Windsor, Prahran, Caulfield, Brighton, Hampton, Sandringham, Albert Park, Middle Park, Port Melbourne, Bentleigh and the bayside suburbs, plus a steady stream of visitors staying in St Kilda who want something to do that is not the beach.
Coming from further out, South Yarra is closer to the CBD, Hawthorn suits the inner east, and Chadstone has parking on site for the south east.
Questions about this venue
What is the scariest escape room at St Kilda?
The Conjoining, a demonic paranormal horror at our Terrifying tier. It is also the hardest room here at four out of five, which is an unusual combination and worth knowing before you book.
Is there anything for young children?
Treasure Island, from around six or seven with an adult. It is rated Not scary, our lowest tier, and the cursed ghost ship in it is an adventure problem rather than a horror one.
Can half of us do horror while the others do something else?
Yes, and it is what this venue is for. Book two rooms at the same start time and compare notes afterwards.
Is The Last of Them a zombie room?
Close. The threat is the infected rather than the undead, and it sits at Intense rather than Terrifying, so it is the survival horror a mixed group can actually book.
How many people can play at once?
Up to 24 across the four rooms in the same time slot. Beyond that we can look at back-to-back sessions.
Can we make an afternoon of it?
It is the venue best suited to that. Luna Park, the foreshore and Acland Street are all a short walk, so a morning or early afternoon session leaves the rest of the day open.
