Is this theme right for you?
It's Nightmare is a genuine haunted-house horror: ten years ago children vanished from your hometown, including your friend Georgia, and now the thing that took them is back. You track it to the abandoned house at the end of the street, where your deepest fears are waiting. If you loved IT and Pennywise, the vanishing children, the small town with something ancient beneath it, and a group returning to face what haunted them, or the dream-horror of A Nightmare on Elm Street, where your worst fears come for you, this room was built for you. It is one of our genuinely frightening rooms, all low light, dread and sudden scares, with everything coming from the set and the story rather than a live actor. It suits people who want a proper fright.

Frequently asked questions
- Is It's Nightmare based on Nightmare on Elm Street or IT?
- It is our own original horror story, made for fans of that kind of film. If you loved IT and Pennywise, a hometown where children vanish and something waits to be faced, or the nightmare-horror of A Nightmare on Elm Street, you will feel right at home. Every scare comes from the set and the story, never a live actor.
- Is It's Nightmare actually scary?
- Yes. It is one of our genuinely frightening rooms, built around low lighting, an unsettling atmosphere and sudden scares. The fear comes from the set, the lighting, the sound and the story, not from anything chasing you. See the "how scary is it" scale above.
- Are there live actors, or does anything chase us?
- No. There are no live actors, and nothing chases or follows you. Every scare comes from the set, the lighting, the sound and the story, never from a person in the room with you.
- Will anything touch or grab us?
- No. It is a hands-off experience. Nothing in the room makes contact with you, and you never need to touch anything you would rather not.
- Can we leave if it gets too much?
- Anytime. You are never locked in, the door stays unlocked, and you can step out whenever you like. Your games master watches the whole game and can pause or step in within seconds.
- I get claustrophobic. Will I feel trapped?
- No. You are never locked in and the exit is always available, so you can step out the moment you want to. If you would rather skip the horror, Game of the Dragon and Cluemanji at South Yarra are brighter, all-ages rooms.
- Is it suitable for first-timers?
- Yes. It is a solid challenge, but no experience is needed and your games master gives hints to keep every team moving. Just know it is genuinely scary, so it suits first-timers who actively want a fright.
- What is the minimum age?
- We recommend 15 and up, and it is not designed for younger players. Under-15s are welcome only at parental discretion with a participating adult in the room.
- How many players do we need?
- Two to six. Larger groups can split across rooms at South Yarra and race head to head.

Is It's Nightmare the scariest escape room at Rush South Yarra?
Yes. Six rooms in the building and this is the only one at Terrifying, our highest scare tier. It is also the one to book if you want a genuinely frightening hour without gore and without tight spaces, which makes it the most widely playable of our terrifying rooms.
That last part is worth spelling out, because it is the reason people end up here after ruling out the others. Our scariest rooms take three different routes to the same destination. HackSaw at Hawthorn and HackSaw: Remastered at Chadstone are trap horror: visceral, confined, restraint in play, and a hard no for anyone who cannot do blood or small spaces. The Conjoining at St Kilda is a demonic haunting, no gore, but relentlessly dark.
It's Nightmare is neither. There is no gore, and the room does not rely on confinement. The fear is psychological and it is aimed at something more personal than a mechanism or a demon. It is aimed at what you were afraid of before you learned to be embarrassed about it.
Where the fear comes from
There is no live actor in this room, and no live actor in any of our sixteen rooms, at any venue, at any time of year. Nothing chases you. Nothing touches you. Everything frightening here is built into the room.
Nightmare horror is the strand of the genre that goes after your subconscious rather than your survival instinct, and it works on a simple and slightly unfair premise: the things that frightened you at seven still frighten you now, they have just been filed somewhere you do not look. The dark at the top of the stairs. The shape in the doorway that turns out to be a dressing gown. The certainty, entirely immune to argument, that something is under the bed and that it knows you are awake.
Adults have not stopped believing any of that. They have just stopped being in situations that test it. Then the lights go down in a room built by people who know exactly which situations those are, and it turns out the belief was sitting there the whole time.
So the tools are low light, sound that arrives before you can place it, sudden moments that come from the room itself, and a set built to feel like a place you have been rather than a set you are looking at. The abandoned house at the end of the street is not a set piece. It is a memory almost everybody has some version of.
The door is not locked. It never is, in any escape room we run. You can step out at any second of the sixty minutes and your games master watches the whole game and can pause it or come in within seconds.
What nightmare horror draws on
The dream, and the fear of sleep
The dream-horror tradition made one genuinely original contribution to the genre: it took away the safe place. In every other horror story, surviving the night means you have survived. In dream horror, going to sleep is when it starts. Sleep paralysis, night terrors, lucid dreaming, the waking hallucination, insomnia held off for as long as a body can manage. Anyone who has had sleep paralysis will tell you it is the most frightening thing that has ever happened to them, and that the frightening part was being unable to move while fully aware of the room. That specific helplessness is what the whole strand is built on.
What makes it good escape room material is the logic. Dreams do not obey physical rules and neither, quite, does this room. Objects mean more than they should. Space behaves oddly. A puzzle that would be straightforward in daylight becomes something else when the rules are dream rules and the room has already shown you it is willing to bend them.
The thing that becomes your fear
The second strand is older and it appears in every culture that has one: the shapeshifter that takes the form of whatever frightens the person looking at it. A creature that feeds on fear does not need a fixed shape. It needs you to have a phobia, and everyone obliges.
That is why the boogeyman survives when so many monsters do not. He is not a specific thing. He is the thing in the wardrobe, the thing beneath the bed, the thing at the window, the shape in the wallpaper. It also explains why clowns became the modern default face for it: a painted grin is a fixed expression on a face that is meant to be expressive, and coulrophobia is real enough to be one of the most commonly reported specific phobias in the world.
The small town and the missing children
The third strand supplies the structure. Something ancient beneath an ordinary town. Children who vanish on a cycle, decades apart, in numbers the adults find reasons not to add up. A group who were there when it happened and have to come back, older, to finish it. That shape gives you the two things a horror story needs most: a reason the characters cannot simply leave, and a history to uncover, which is the part that turns it into a puzzle.
It's Nightmare is built from all three. Ten years ago children disappeared from your hometown, one of them your friend Georgia, and the thing that took them is back. You track it to the abandoned house at the end of the street. If your reference points are the small town with something under it and the vanishing children, or the dream-horror tradition where the danger finds you when you are least able to run, you are in the right room. It is our own original story, not an adaptation of anything.
How we rate scare, and why it is not difficulty
Two independent scales, because they measure different things and confusing them is how people end up in the wrong room. Difficulty is the puzzles, one to five stars. Scare is the experience, four named tiers.
It's Nightmare is Terrifying on the scare scale and four out of five on difficulty. The only room at South Yarra in the top tier, and one of five across the network. The puzzles are a genuine challenge on top of the fear, which is the harder combination to hold together, and it is the reason this room rewards a group that can keep talking to each other in the dark.
Who this room is for, and who it is not
Book it if: you want a genuinely scary escape room without gore, you cannot do tight spaces but still want to be frightened, you like psychological horror more than splatter, or you have a group who have done a few rooms and want the hardest hour at South Yarra.
Pick something else if: it is a first escape room for someone nervous, you have younger kids in the group, anyone is pregnant or has a heart condition, or somebody has a genuine phobia of the dark.
Age. Fifteen and over. Under-15s only at parental discretion and only with an adult playing in the room. For a kids birthday or a family group at South Yarra, Monsterz and Cluemanji are the all-ages rooms in the same building.
Claustrophobia. This is the terrifying room to pick if confinement is your issue. You are never locked in, the exit is always available, and the room does not depend on crawl spaces or tight compartments to frighten you. It is dark, not close. If you want terror and you can handle confinement, the HackSaw rooms go the other way.
Anxiety and sensory sensitivity. Tell us at check-in. We can brief you on what is coming, keep the lights higher, drop the volume, or have your games master stay in closer contact through the game. It costs nothing to ask.
Language. The puzzles are deliberately designed not to depend on English fluency. Almost everything is solved through symbols, patterns, objects, numbers and physical logic rather than reading and wordplay, across all sixteen rooms.
Groups. Two to six players. South Yarra is our flagship with six rooms, so larger groups split across several and play at the same time. That is what makes it the venue for bigger birthdays, hens and bucks nights and work bookings.
Questions people ask before booking
Is it gory?
No. There is no blood and nothing designed to disgust you. It's Nightmare is psychological horror. If you want visceral, HackSaw at Hawthorn and HackSaw: Remastered at Chadstone are the visceral rooms.
Are there live actors?
No. Not here and not in any of our sixteen rooms, at any venue, in any season, including Halloween. Every scare comes from the set, the lighting, the sound and the story.
Which is scarier, It's Nightmare or The Conjoining?
Both sit at Terrifying, so it depends what gets to you. The Conjoining is a demonic haunting and works on the sense of a presence in the room. It's Nightmare is psychological and works on your own fears. People who find the supernatural silly are usually more frightened by this one.
Will anything touch or grab us?
No. It is hands-off throughout. Nothing in the room makes contact with you.
Can we leave if it gets too much?
At any time. You are never locked in, the door stays unlocked and you can step out the moment you want to.
Is this a good first horror escape room?
Only if the group is up for it. It is our highest scare tier and four out of five on puzzles. If anyone is unsure, start at the Spooky tier and work up.
Where it sits among Melbourne's scariest escape rooms
Five rooms at Terrifying across four venues. They frighten you in genuinely different ways, and if you are working through the horror circuit, the differences matter more than the ranking.
| Room | Venue | Difficulty | The kind of fear |
|---|---|---|---|
| It's Nightmare | South Yarra | 4 / 5 | Psychological. Dream logic, childhood fear, low light. No gore, no confinement. |
| The Conjoining | St Kilda | 4 / 5 | Supernatural. A demonic haunting and the sense of a presence. No gore. |
| HackSaw | Hawthorn | 3 / 5 | Trap horror. Visceral, confined, restraint in play. The original. |
| HackSaw: Remastered | Chadstone | 4 / 5 | Trap horror, rebuilt harder. Tight spaces that cannot be avoided. |
| HackSaw: Chapter 2 | South Yarra | 4 / 5 | Rated Intense. Pressure and a burning clock rather than gore. |
A step below, The Last of Them at St Kilda is post-apocalyptic survival horror at the Intense tier, and Strangest Thing here in Hawthorn sits at Spooky, which is the right first step for anyone testing whether they like this at all. See all our horror escape rooms.
