Escape rooms for two players
All sixteen accept a booking of two, and a pair counts as a whole team rather than a partial one. Nobody is added to your session to make up numbers, because bookings are private whatever size they are.
What changes with two is not the difficulty rating. It is which part of the hour gets harder and which part gets easier, and knowing that in advance is most of the advantage.
What two players lose, and what they gain
You lose ground on searching
The real constraintHalf the hands means half the sweep rate, and that is the entire disadvantage. Take it seriously, because a pair that loses to the clock has nearly always lost it hunting rather than reasoning.
You gain everything downstream of it
The underrated partBig groups leak. A discovery gets mentioned sideways to one person and dies there. A pair cannot leak, because there is nowhere for a fact to go except to the other player, and neither of you can drift to the back of the room.
The net effect is that pairs finish rooms at a rate that surprises people, and when they lose, they lose to the clock rather than to the puzzles.
Which rooms suit a pair
All sixteen are playable with two. These are the ones where two is the intended shape rather than the minimum.
Da Vinci Down Under and Mission:Possible
Chadstone, both capped at four players, both rated 5 out of 5The only two rooms in the network that do not seat six. Built for a small team, which means the puzzle density is tuned for fewer hands rather than diluted across more. Both are our hardest rating and neither has any fright element.
Two players in either is a serious undertaking and you may well not finish. That is the point of them.
The three-out-of-five rooms
Cluemanji, Monsterz, The Nine-Nine, Treasure Island, Alice in WonderlandWhere two players have the most comfortable time. Enough to do without more searching than a pair can get through, and the right level if this is one of your first rooms.
The large four-out-of-five rooms
Game of the Dragon, Secret Agent Man, and the horror tierPlayable with two but built with six in mind, so expect the searching to eat a real share of the hour. Take these as a pair when you already know how you work together.
How a pair should play differently
- Split the room physically, not the puzzles. One of you takes the left half and one the right, sweep completely, then pool everything. Two people working the same object is the most common waste in a two-player game.
- Narrate constantly. With six players over-talking is noise. With two it is the mechanism. Say what you are looking at even when it seems irrelevant.
- One surface for everything found. A pair cannot afford to lose track of a single item.
- Take hints earlier than a big group would. You have half the hands and the same sixty minutes. There is no penalty and no limit.
- Do not split up for the finale. Endgames are usually built to need two pairs of hands at once, which is one thing a pair is never short of.
What two players pay
Monday to Thursday. Two players take the room for $148, any session, no code required.
Weekends, and public holidays. $74 a head.
All day Tuesday. Cheap Tuesday is the cheapest a pair can play, outside public and Victorian school holidays.
A pair pays more per head than a full room does, because the price is per player and the ladder falls as a room fills. Every figure is on prices and deals.
Questions
Will we be put in with another group?
Never. Every session is private regardless of numbers.
Can two people really finish a five out of five?
It happens, and not often. Take one as a pair when you want to find out how good you actually are rather than when you want a clean win.
Is it better with two or four?
Different. Two is a conversation, four is a team. Neither is the correct answer, and plenty of people who play a lot prefer two.
We are two adults and one child.
That is three, which is fine everywhere, and it brings the weekday adult rate into range. Rooms for kids and families has the detail.
Is this a good date?
Reliably. Date ideas in Melbourne covers which room to pick for which kind of evening and where to go afterwards.
Two players can take any of the sixteen. If capacity is not the thing you are choosing on, here is every other way in.
