A day in Carlton

Carlton packs more into a few square kilometres than most suburbs manage in ten. Here is a day worth building around a game.

Lygon Street: Little Italy

Lygon Street between Victoria and Elgin is where Melbourne's cafe culture was born. Brunetti Classico has one of the city's great pastry cabinets, D.O.C. does proper pizza and espresso, Jimmy Watson's has been pouring wine since 1935, and Toto's claims Australia's first pizzeria. Finish with a gelato and an argument about who does the best coffee.

Carlton Gardens and the Museum

Two blocks east, the UNESCO-listed Royal Exhibition Building and its ornamental lake sit in the Carlton Gardens, free to wander, and the Melbourne Museum next door is a full afternoon in itself, with a children's gallery for younger groups.

Books, film and a student buzz

Readings on Lygon is one of Melbourne's best independent bookshops, Cinema Nova is the arthouse cinema locals have loved since the '90s, and the University of Melbourne on the doorstep keeps the whole strip buzzing.

…then the escape room

The easy part: South Yarra is a short trip across town, with six rooms and live availability below. Hawthorn is an easy run east if it suits your group better.

Reasons to book an escape room near Carlton

Whatever the occasion, there is a Rush room close to Carlton to build it around. Each of these has its own guide if you want to go deeper.

Date night, with Lygon Street on either side of it

Carlton is one of Melbourne's best eating strips, which makes an escape room a strong first act. Book an early-evening room at South Yarra, then head back to Lygon for pasta and a wine at Jimmy Watson's. It beats another dinner-and-a-movie, and it gives you something to actually talk about afterwards.

A day out, and what's on nearby

Make a day of it. Coffee and pastries on Lygon, an hour in the Melbourne Museum or the Carlton Gardens, a game across town, and a film at Cinema Nova to finish. An escape room slots into about 90 minutes, so it is easy to build a full day around.

A team offsite with a difference

Plenty of media, tech and university teams sit around Carlton. An escape room puts a group under real pressure and shows you how they work when the clock is against them. Weekday daytime is our corporate window, priced by the room.
