Haunted escape rooms in Melbourne
Two questions get asked before anything else, so here are both answers up front. Yes, we run genuinely haunted rooms, and no, this is not a haunted house walkthrough.
The distinction matters because Melbourne has very little in the way of a permanent haunted house attraction. Most of what exists is seasonal, runs for a fortnight in October and sells out in September. If you have searched for a horror house or a scary house in Melbourne and come up short, a haunted escape room is the year-round version of the thing you were looking for, and in several ways it is a better one.
Haunted house or haunted escape room?
They deliver different hours and it is worth knowing which you want before you book either.
| Haunted house walkthrough | Haunted escape room | |
|---|---|---|
| How long | Ten to twenty minutes | A full hour |
| Who is in it | You, strangers, and performers | Only your own group |
| What you do | Walk a set route | Explore, search and solve |
| The fear | Density of shocks | Accumulating dread |
| Control | The route moves you along | You set the pace |
| When | Mostly seasonal | Seven days a week, all year |
If what you want is to be shocked repeatedly for fifteen minutes and come out laughing, a walkthrough does that better and we will not pretend otherwise. If you want to be somewhere genuinely unsettling for an hour with nobody but your own friends, and to have something to actually do while the dread builds, this is the format.
The second difference is the one people underestimate. In a walkthrough you are being moved through somebody else's timing. In a haunted room the building has time to work on you, and the fear becomes an active opponent, because you are trying to think clearly in a place designed to stop you.
What a haunting actually is
The haunted house is the oldest strand in horror and it survives because the frightening thing is not the ghost. It is the wrongness of a familiar space.
A kitchen is not scary. A kitchen where one object is not where you left it is unbearable, and that is the entire mechanism. The genre's vocabulary is domestic and architectural rather than monstrous: the attic nobody goes into, the basement door that will not stay shut, the cold spot on the landing that is three degrees down and nobody can explain, the apparition at the end of a hallway, the room the previous owners bricked up and did not mention.
Poltergeist activity belongs here too, and it is the most unsettling part of the strand precisely because it is so ordinary. Objects that move when nobody is watching. Doors that close. Knocking that answers when you knock back, which is worse than knocking that does not, because it means something is listening.
What makes all of this exceptional escape room material is that a haunted house is already a puzzle box. Something happened here. The building kept the evidence. Everything you can see is a clue to something you cannot, and the work of the hour is reading a place rather than being told about it.
The investigation, and why it makes the best rooms
The other half of the modern haunting story is the investigation, and it is the half that turns atmosphere into a game.
Paranormal investigation is procedural by nature. Somebody arrives with equipment and a method, they record and measure and document, and the record outlives them. The EVP recording with something on it that nobody said. The EMF meter that spikes in one corner. The case file, the photographs, the thermal reading, the tape still running after the person holding the camera stopped talking. Real-world ghost hunting is where the modern haunting film got its shape, and structurally it is already an escape room: a small group in an unfamiliar building, gathering evidence, working out what happened here before it happens to them.
It also solves the problem that pure atmosphere cannot. A room can be extraordinarily eerie and have nothing to do in it. The investigation frame hands you a reason to open everything, a format for what you find, and a chain of documents to reconstruct. It is why the strongest haunted rooms are never just a dark house. They are a dark house plus somebody's notes.
Our haunted rooms
We run two, and we would rather say two than pad the list. Between them they cover both halves of the strand.
The Conjoining, St Kilda
The investigation. Two years ago a pair of paranormal investigators went into what was meant to be a routine haunting and did not come out. What they left behind is a record, and you are the ones who have to read it before the thing that took them notices you.
Our scariest and hardest room at that venue, and the purest haunting we have built. Sustained darkness, sound that sits at the edge of hearing, and no gore of any kind. It is a demonic haunting rather than a friendly ghost story, and it is rated for sixteen and over for a reason.
It's Nightmare, South Yarra
The house at the end of the street. Ten years ago children vanished from your hometown, one of them your friend, and the thing that took them is back. You track it to the abandoned house everyone in town avoids and nobody talks about.
Closer to the haunted house tradition than the investigation one, and psychological rather than supernatural in its mechanics. No gore, and no confinement, which makes it the top-tier fright available to anyone who cannot do tight spaces.
If you want the same eerie register without the top tier, Alice in Wonderland at St Kilda is rated Spooky and suits most ages: a place where the rules keep changing rather than a place with something in it.
What is never in the room
No live actors. Not in one of our sixteen rooms, at any venue, in any season including Halloween. There is nobody in the building playing a ghost.
Nothing chases you and nothing touches you. Every room is hands-off. Nothing makes contact with you at any point.
You are never locked in. The door is unlocked in every room we run and you can step out at any second. Your games master watches the whole game and can talk to you, pause it or come in within seconds.
No gore in either haunted room. Both work on dread rather than on anything you would rather not look at.
The no-actor point matters more in this strand than any other. A haunting is supposed to be a presence you cannot locate, and the instant a person in costume appears, the presence has a shape and a shoe size and the whole illusion collapses. Building it out of the room itself is harder and it is the only version that holds for a full hour.
Questions
Is there a haunted house in Melbourne?
Very little permanently. Most Melbourne haunted house attractions are seasonal, run for a short window around Halloween and book out early. A haunted escape room runs seven days a week all year, lasts a full hour, and contains only your own group.
Are there ghosts, or is it a person in a costume?
Neither. There are no live actors in any of our rooms. Everything comes from the set, the lighting, the sound design and the story, which is what lets the dread build rather than spike.
Which is the scarier of the two?
The Conjoining for a presence in the room with you, and it is the more purely supernatural of the pair. It's Nightmare for personal fear and dream logic. Both sit at our top tier.
Can we leave if it gets too much?
At any second. The door stays unlocked and your games master is watching the entire game.
Is it suitable for teenagers?
The Conjoining is 16 and over. It's Nightmare is 15 and over. For a younger group who want atmosphere, Alice in Wonderland and Strangest Thing are rated Spooky and suit most ages with an adult.
Do you have anything about possession or exorcism specifically?
Yes. The Conjoining is a demonic haunting, and the rite and the possession side of the genre are covered on our possession and exorcism page.
