The plan you had is off. Now what
Nobody searches for a wet-weather activity in the abstract. They search for one because something specific has just fallen over. The picnic, the beach, the market, the walk, the thing that was going to fill the afternoon and now will not.
So this is not a list of indoor attractions. It is about what the good replacement actually needs to do, which is more than simply have a roof on it, and why the obvious substitutes tend to disappoint on exactly the day you need them.
The problem with everyone else's plan B
Here is what happens across the city when the forecast turns. Every group that had an outdoor plan reaches for the same short list at the same time. The cinema, the big shopping centre, the museum, the bowling alley, the arcade.
Those are all fine on a dry Tuesday. On a wet Saturday they are the busiest they get all week. You queue, you wait for a table, the session you wanted is sold out, the place is loud and full of other people who also had their day cancelled. You have swapped a ruined plan for a crowded one, and the group is now managing the day rather than enjoying it.
The difference here is structural rather than a matter of taste. A booked room is private and it is yours for a fixed hour. Nobody else is in it, you are not sharing it with strangers, and the time is held for you. Wet-weather demand can make it harder to get a slot, but it cannot make the slot you have got any worse. That is not true of a single other item on the list above.

What a wet-weather plan actually has to do
Four tests, and most of the usual answers fail at least one of them.
- Get everyone inside quickly. Not a venue with a two-block walk from the nearest parking, in the rain, with somebody's grandmother.
- Stay inside once you are there. Plans that involve moving between three indoor places are outdoor plans with extra steps.
- Work for the whole group. A wet day usually means an unplanned group, often with children and adults in it who would not normally choose the same activity.
- Have a fixed time. Turning up somewhere on spec is exactly what fails when everybody else has the same idea.
An escape room passes all four, which is less a boast than an accident of what it is: booked, indoors, one building, one hour, everyone together.
Which venue when you are driving in the rain
On a wet day the parking is the plan. This is the order we would put them in if the weather is the reason you are coming.
Chadstone, if you are driving
The car park sits on the property itself, so the distance from the boot to the door is measured in steps rather than blocks. None of the other three can offer that. Three rooms, at number 53 on Warrigal Road in Oakleigh, with the shopping centre close by if the group wants to stretch the booking into a whole afternoon under cover.
Hawthorn, if you are coming by tram or train
Stop 72 on the 16 tram is right outside the door and Glenferrie Station is a 150-metre walk, so the exposed part of the trip is close to nothing. Street parking on Glenferrie Road and the streets behind it is free. Three rooms, at 606 Glenferrie Road.
South Yarra, if you are coming from the city
Six rooms and the widest choice of any venue, two minutes from South Yarra Station, with the Como Centre car park a similar distance if you drive. The entrance is at 147 Osborne Street rather than the Toorak Road frontage, worth knowing before you circle the block in the wet.
St Kilda, if you are already bayside
Four rooms upstairs at 100 Barkly Street, and the venue with the broadest range from gentle to genuinely frightening. The beach plan it replaces is a short walk away for whenever the weather sorts itself out.
What it costs on a weekday, which is when most wet plans collapse
Monday to Thursday, all day. Bring 3 or more adults and it is $50 each, no code. A washed-out weekday afternoon is the cheapest time to be here.
Weekends and public holidays. $74 a player, easing to $70 at six.
A player aged 9 to 13 costs $42, and anyone under 16 needs an adult in the room with them.

Does the room care what the weather is doing?
Not in the slightest. Every room is inside a sealed, climate-controlled set with its own lighting and sound. Most of them have no idea what time of day it is, let alone what season.

Do we need to bring anything for the weather?
Only what gets you from the car to the door. Bags and coats go in lockers, and the only real requirement in any room is closed-in shoes.
Is it busier when it rains?
Yes, noticeably, which is the one downside. Same-day slots that would sit open on a fine day get taken on a wet one, so if the forecast is already bad for tomorrow, book tonight rather than in the morning.
