Date Ideas in Melbourne: Escape Rooms for Two

Stuck for a date idea in Melbourne? An escape room beats dinner-and-a-movie because you actually do something together. Sixty minutes of solving, laughing and figuring each other out, then dinner or a drink nearby with plenty to talk about. All our rooms play with two.

★★★★★ 4.9 on Google from 2,700+ reviews across our four Melbourne venues.

Why an escape room is a great date

A shared challenge tells you more about someone than an hour of small talk. You see how they think, how they handle pressure and whether you make a good team, and there is always a story to unpack over dinner afterwards. Every Rush room works as a two-player game, so it is just the pair of you against the clock.

Our venues sit in some of Melbourne's best eating-and-drinking pockets, South Yarra by Chapel Street, St Kilda by the foreshore, Hawthorn on Glenferrie Road, so it is easy to build a full evening around the hour.

Good date rooms

From a grab-your-arm fright to a fun adventure:

Make a night of it

Book an early-evening slot, then walk to dinner. Around South Yarra you have Chapel Street; around St Kilda, the foreshore and Fitzroy Street; around Hawthorn, Glenferrie Road. If you both like a scare, our horror rooms are the network's most-feared hour, no live actors, just tension.

A pair is a full team, not a short one

Plenty of group activities treat two people as an incomplete version of the real thing. You get the same experience with half the value, or you get put in with strangers to make up numbers. Neither happens here.

Every one of our sixteen rooms opens at two players, the booking is private whatever size it is, and nobody is ever added to your session to fill it out. What follows is what actually changes when it is the two of you, which room to take for which kind of evening, and what the hour costs for a pair.

What is different about playing with two

The received wisdom is that more people means an easier room. It is only half right, and the half it gets wrong is the interesting half.

You lose ground on searching. Six people cover a set faster than two. A pair has to be more systematic about where it has already looked, and that is the main reason two-player groups run out of clock.

You gain everything else. With six players, information gets dropped. Somebody finds a thing, mentions it to one person, and it never reaches whoever needed it. With two, every discovery is heard by the entire team, nothing sits in a pocket unmentioned, and neither of you can quietly disengage and let the room happen around you.

Couples also tend to be far better than they expect at the part groups find hardest, which is saying the half-formed idea out loud before it is fully worked out. Six people in a room full of strangers-ish colleagues will not do that. Two people who know each other will.

The two rooms scaled to a small team

Fourteen of our rooms run from two to six. Two of them run from two to four, and they are worth singling out on this page specifically, because a room built for a smaller number plays differently for a pair than a six-player room does.

Da Vinci Down Under

Chadstone, 2 to 4 players, difficulty 5 of 5, not scary

Lost inventions, cryptography and a chain of mechanisms. No fear element at all, which makes it a clean test of whether the two of you actually think well together rather than a test of nerve.

Mission: Possible

Chadstone, 2 to 4 players, difficulty 5 of 5, not scary

Espionage, gadgets and a lot of moving parts. Same capacity, same rating, completely different feel. It rewards a pair who split the room and report back rather than a pair who stay glued together.

These are our two hardest rooms, and it is worth saying plainly that a pair will often not finish either of them. That is not a reason to avoid them. An hour spent genuinely stuck together, then talked about all through dinner, is a better date than a comfortable win in something easy. If that is not the mood, take an easier room and enjoy the clean finish instead. Difficulty is published for every room on the scare scale page, rated separately from how frightening it is.

Choosing by what kind of evening it is

  • A first date. The specific question of whether that is a good idea, with the honest downsides, is worked through in our guide to escape rooms as a first date. Short version: pick something in the middle of the difficulty range and leave the 5 of 5 rooms for later.
  • Together a long time. Go hard. You already know how the other one behaves at dinner. You almost certainly do not know how they behave at minute fifty-two with two locks left.
  • An anniversary or something you want to remember. Take a room with a big set and heavy effects rather than the hardest puzzles, so the hour is something you walked through rather than something you solved.
  • One of you likes horror and the other does not. Do not use the date to win that argument. Eight of the sixteen are rated not scary at all, and the fear rating for every room is published so nobody is talked into anything at the door.
  • A double date. Two couples in one room works. Two couples in two rooms at the same venue, same start time, comparing times afterwards, works considerably better.

What an hour for two costs

A weeknight, Monday to Thursday, all day. A party of two is $148 for the pair.

Friday through the weekend, and public holidays. $74 each.

All day Tuesday. Cheap Tuesday is our lowest rate of the week for a couple and needs no code. Public holidays and Victorian school holidays are excluded.

If the date is already in the diary, Early Bird is worth using: the code earlybird removes 15 per cent from any booking made 7 days or more ahead. Every figure for every day sits on the prices and deals page.

Where to go afterwards, if it is going well

The hour is deliberately short, so the evening has somewhere to go next. Each venue opens onto a different kind of after.

  • South Yarra puts Chapel Street at the door, which is the most options within a five-minute walk of any venue we run.
  • Hawthorn sits in the middle of the Glenferrie Road strip, so you step out of the room and into the choice rather than driving to it.
  • St Kilda has Fitzroy Street one way and the water the other, and a walk along the foreshore is the better second act if the conversation is worth continuing.
  • Chadstone holds the two hardest rooms and a cinema minutes away, which suits an evening where the room is the main event.

Questions couples ask

Will it just be the two of us in there?

Always. Every booking is private, regardless of how many are in it. You will not be joined to another group to fill the room.

Can two people realistically finish a room?

Yes, in most of them, and pairs do it every week. The two 5 of 5 rooms at Chadstone are the ones where a pair is genuinely up against it.

Is a horror room a good or a terrible date idea?

Excellent if you both want it, and a bad hour for one of you if only one does. Nothing in any room is a person, so the fear comes from darkness, sound and set design rather than from someone jumping out.

What if one of us is much better at it?

Unlikely to show. Rooms are built as chains of different kinds of thinking, so the person who is useless at codes is usually the one who spots the physical thing everyone walked past.

We want to give one as a present.

A gift voucher covers it and lets them pick the room and the night, which matters more here than it does with most gifts.
