Frequently asked questions

How long does an escape room take?
Each room runs for 60 minutes. Allow about 90 minutes on site in total for arrival, your briefing, the game and a quick photo debrief at the end.
How many players can play?
Our rooms suit groups of 2 to 6. Larger groups can split across rooms and compete, just ask.
Do we need any experience?
None at all. Every room comes with a briefing, and you are never actually locked in. Most first-timers are hooked within ten minutes.
Is it scary?
It depends on the room. We have everything from family-friendly adventures to genuine horror. Each room shows its difficulty and how scary it is above.
Which is the scariest room at South Yarra?
It's Nightmare is our genuinely frightening horror room, recommended for ages 15 and up. HackSaw: Chapter 2 is a tense Saw-style thriller. The rest, Monsterz, Cluemanji, Game of the Dragon and the spy room Secret Agent Man, have no real scares.
Which rooms are best for kids and families?
Monsterz, Cluemanji and Game of the Dragon are all-ages with no scares, and our most popular choices for families and kids' birthdays.
Can children play?
Yes. Players under 16 are welcome with a participating adult in the room.
Where are you and where do we park?
160 Toorak Road, South Yarra VIC 3141. Entry is on the Osborne Street side, at 147 Osborne Street, not the Toorak Road frontage. We are a two-minute walk from South Yarra Station, with trams along Toorak Road and Chapel Street within 200 metres. Which room should you book at South Yarra?

Six rooms is more than any other escape room venue we run, and it is the reason this one takes the widest range of groups. Every scare tier is represented, difficulty runs from three out of five to four, and the rooms have almost nothing in common with each other beyond the building.

We rate every room on two separate scales, because how hard a room is and how frightening it is are different things. Here is the whole venue on both.

RoomScareDifficultyBook it if
It's NightmareTerrifying4 / 5You want a genuinely frightening hour with no gore and no tight spaces. 15 and over.
HackSaw: Chapter 2Intense4 / 5You want pressure and a burning clock without the gore of the other HackSaw rooms.
Secret Agent ManNot scary4 / 5You want a hard room with no horror. The best work-group booking in the network.
Game of the DragonNot scary4 / 5You want a serious challenge that the whole family can still play together.
CluemanjiNot scary3 / 5It is a first escape room, or a birthday for kids around six or seven and up.
MonsterzNot scary3 / 5You have the youngest players in your group. The gentlest room we run.

The short version. Never done one: Cluemanji. Small children: Monsterz. Work group: Secret Agent Man. Want to be scared: It's Nightmare. Want to be beaten by puzzles without a horror theme: Game of the Dragon.

What this venue is best at

South Yarra is our flagship, and the thing six rooms buys you is not choice for its own sake. It is the ability to keep a group together while sending them to completely different hours.

That is the problem most escape room bookings run into. Someone in the group will not do horror. Someone else has driven across town specifically to do horror. There are three kids and four adults and one person who has played thirty rooms. In a two-room venue that is a negotiation somebody loses. Here it is a timetable.

Book two, three or four rooms in the same time slot, everybody plays at once, and the whole group meets back in the lounge afterwards to compare times and argue about which room was harder. That last twenty minutes is reliably the best part of the visit, and it only happens if the group played separately.

It is also the venue with the shortest trip from the city, which is why it takes most of our corporate work.

Booking for a big group

Each room holds two to six players, so six rooms means up to 36 people playing at the same time, and larger numbers again if you run back-to-back waves across the evening. No other escape room venue in our network comes close, and few in Melbourne do.

How it works in practice:

Up to 12 people: two rooms, same time slot. Pick two with different scare tiers if the group is mixed.

12 to 24 people: three or four rooms simultaneously. This is the standard shape for a work social or a big birthday.

24 to 36 people: all six rooms at once. Worth booking well ahead, particularly on a weekend.

More than 36: back-to-back waves, with the second group arriving as the first finishes. Email enquiries@rushescapegame.com.au and we will build the schedule.

One practical note that saves a lot of grief: groups of four to six in a room work better than groups of two or three for most people. A six-player room with two people in it is a much harder hour, and a six-player room with six people in it is a party. The exception is our five out of five rooms, which are at Chadstone and cap at four deliberately.

Parties, celebrations and work groups

Kids birthdays. Cluemanji and Monsterz are the two rooms with nothing frightening in them at all. For a party spanning a wide age range, run those alongside Game of the Dragon for the older kids, who will enjoy being told their room was harder. Full detail on the kids birthday page.

Corporate and team building. Start with Secret Agent Man. The mission structure gives everyone a role without assigning one, the countdown creates genuine urgency, and nobody has to opt out on nerves, which matters more in a work group than any other kind. If the team is large, split across rooms of similar difficulty so the comparison at the end is fair. See the team building page for formats and rates.

Hens, bucks and milestones. Six rooms means a group can split by appetite rather than by argument. See hens, bucks and milestone celebrations.

Schools. South Yarra takes the largest school groups in the network because of the back-to-back wave structure. Details, pricing and the compliance paperwork are on the school excursions page.

Not sure yet? A gift voucher lets the recipient pick the room and the time, which solves the problem of buying an experience for somebody whose tolerance for being frightened you do not know.

Accessibility, and what to tell us

Tell us at check-in, or before you book if it will affect which room you choose. We can brief a player on what is coming, keep the lights higher, drop the volume, or have your games master stay in closer contact through the game. It costs nothing to ask and it is far better than pushing through a bad hour.

Things worth knowing across the venue:

Nothing depends on English fluency. Our puzzles are built on symbols, patterns, objects, numbers and physical logic rather than reading and wordplay, in all sixteen rooms. A group with mixed English plays on equal footing.

No live actors, anywhere. Not in one of our rooms, at any venue, in any season including Halloween. Nothing chases you, nothing touches you, and you are never locked in. The door is unlocked in every room and you can step out at any second.

Companion Card holders play free, and we have adapted rooms for Deaf and Auslan groups, blind and low vision players and players with intellectual disabilities since 2016. Call us on 03 9972 8021 or email southyarra@rushescapegame.com.au and we will tell you honestly what a specific room is like, including when the answer is that a different room would suit better.

Where we draw from

Rush South Yarra is at 160 Toorak Road, entered via 147 Osborne Street, about two minutes from South Yarra Station and a short walk from the Chapel Street end of town.

It is the closest venue in our network to the Melbourne CBD, and the most common trip is a tram or a five-minute train ride from Flinders Street. Beyond that we take a lot of bookings from Prahran, Windsor, Toorak, Armadale, Malvern, Richmond, Cremorne, South Melbourne, Albert Park, Port Melbourne, Middle Park, St Kilda, Elwood, Hawksburn and the inner south east, plus anyone in the city after an evening that does not involve a bar.

If you are coming from the east or the bayside suburbs, Hawthorn and St Kilda may be a shorter trip, and if you are in the south east, Chadstone has parking on site.

Questions about this venue

Can we book more than one room at the same time?

Yes, and for any group over six it is the better way to do it. Up to 36 people can play simultaneously across the six rooms. Book each room for the same start time.

Which room is the scariest at South Yarra?

It's Nightmare, our Terrifying tier. It is also the only room here at that tier, and it has no gore and no confinement, which makes it the most widely playable of our frightening rooms.

Which room is the hardest?

Four rooms share the top rating here at four out of five: It's Nightmare, HackSaw: Chapter 2, Secret Agent Man and Game of the Dragon. Our two five out of five rooms are at Chadstone.

What if half our group will not do horror?

Book them into a different room in the same time slot. That is what a six-room venue is for, and it works far better than talking somebody into an hour they did not want.

Is there a room for very young children?

Monsterz, from around five or six with an adult in the room. It is the gentlest room in the network.

How early should we arrive?

Ten minutes before your start time. Rooms run to a schedule and a late arrival eats into your own hour rather than the next group's.
