Which room should you book at Chadstone?

This is the specialist venue. Two of its three rooms are the hardest we have built in eleven years, and both cap at four players rather than six. If you are experienced and want to be beaten, this is where you come. If it is your first escape room, read the next paragraph before you book.

We rate every room on two separate scales, because how hard a room is and how frightening it is are different things. Chadstone has the most extreme spread in the network.

RoomPlayersScareDifficultyBook it if
Da Vinci Down Under2 to 4Not scary5 / 5You want ciphers, symbols and history, and you want to be properly tested.
Mission:Possible2 to 4Not scary5 / 5You want a vault, a security system and the heist genre at full difficulty.
HackSaw: Remastered2 to 6Terrifying4 / 5You want visceral trap horror, rebuilt harder than the original. 16 and over.

Be honest with yourself about the difficulty. A five out of five means more puzzle layers than the hour comfortably holds and the real possibility that a good group does everything right and still loses. Most groups do not escape these two rooms. That is the intended experience for people who have played a lot of escape rooms and are tired of finishing with twenty minutes to spare. It is a frustrating first escape room.

If this is your first, book Cluemanji at South Yarra, Treasure Island at St Kilda or The Nine-Nine at Hawthorn instead, then come here once you know what you are doing.

Why two rooms cap at four players

This surprises people trying to book for six, so it is worth explaining rather than treating as a limitation.

A five out of five room only works when everybody in it is genuinely working. Put six people into a puzzle this dense and two of them end up watching, which is the worst hour an escape room can deliver and the most common complaint about difficult rooms everywhere. Four is the number at which there is enough for four specialists and no room for a passenger.

It also makes these the two rooms in our network genuinely worth doing as a pair. Most rooms are designed for six and feel thin with two people in them. These were built for a small team from the start, so two experienced players get a full game rather than a stretched one. If you are looking for an escape room for two people in Melbourne, or a date night with an actual challenge in it, this is the answer.

HackSaw: Remastered takes the full two to six, so a larger group can still play together here.

Booking for a group

Because of the player caps, this venue holds up to 14 people at once: six in HackSaw: Remastered and four in each of the other two.

Up to 8: the two five out of five rooms, same start time. The best pairing in the network for an experienced group.

Up to 14: all three rooms at once, with the horror players in Remastered.

More than 14: back-to-back sessions, or another venue. South Yarra takes up to 36 at once and St Kilda up to 24. Email enquiries@rushescapegame.com.au and we will work it out.

Parties, celebrations and work groups

Kids birthdays. Straight answer: this is not the venue for one. Neither five out of five room is any fun for a child expecting to solve it, and the third room is our Terrifying tier and sixteen and over. For a kids party, book South Yarra or Hawthorn, both of which have rooms built for younger players. Details on the kids birthday page.

Corporate and team building. Excellent for a small senior group who want a genuine test, and a poor fit for a large mixed work social because of the caps and the difficulty. If your team is big or mixed, Secret Agent Man at South Yarra is the right booking. If it is four sharp people who want to find out how they perform under real pressure, this is the venue. See the team building page.

Date nights and pairs. The two five out of five rooms are our recommendation for two players anywhere in the network, and there is nothing frightening in either of them.

Hens, bucks and milestones. Works for a smaller, sharper group. For a large party, the bigger venues are the better call. See hens, bucks and milestone celebrations.

Schools. The player caps make this the least efficient venue for a class group. Pricing, formats and compliance paperwork are on the school excursions page, and we will steer you to the right venue.

Accessibility, and what to tell us

Tell us at check-in, or before you book if it will affect which room you pick. We can brief a player on what is coming, keep the lights higher, drop the volume, or have your games master stay in closer contact through the game. It costs nothing to ask.

One thing to know about HackSaw: Remastered. It uses tight spaces that cannot be avoided. If anyone is genuinely claustrophobic, that is the room to skip, and the other two rooms here have no confinement and no horror content at all.

Nothing depends on English fluency. Puzzles are built on symbols, patterns, objects, numbers and physical logic rather than reading and wordplay, in all sixteen rooms. At five out of five that principle matters more, not less.

No live actors, anywhere. Not in one of our rooms, at any venue, in any season including Halloween. Nothing chases you, nothing touches you, and you are never locked in. The door is unlocked in every room and you can step out at any second.

Companion Card holders play free, and we have adapted rooms for Deaf and Auslan groups, blind and low vision players and players with intellectual disabilities since 2016. Call 04 6871 3389 or email oakleigh@rushescapegame.com.au with anything you want to check first.

Where we draw from

Rush Chadstone is at 53 Warrigal Road in Oakleigh, minutes from Chadstone Shopping Centre and a short walk from Oakleigh Station, with parking on site. It is the only venue in our network where parking is not a consideration, which matters more in the south east than it does in the inner city.

Most of our bookings here come from Chadstone, Oakleigh, Malvern East, Carnegie, Murrumbeena, Hughesdale, Ashwood, Mount Waverley, Glen Waverley, Clayton, Notting Hill, Springvale, Bentleigh, Mulgrave, Wheelers Hill, Rowville and the south east.

It is also our newest and most weatherproof night out, which is worth remembering when Melbourne does what Melbourne does to a weekend. If you are coming from elsewhere, South Yarra is closest to the CBD, Hawthorn serves the inner east and St Kilda the bayside.

Questions about this venue

Why can we only book four players?

Da Vinci Down Under and Mission:Possible cap at four because a five out of five room needs everybody working. HackSaw: Remastered takes the full two to six.

What is the hardest escape room at Rush?

Da Vinci Down Under and Mission:Possible, equal, both here. Nothing else in the network is rated above four out of five.

Is this a good venue for a first escape room?

Honestly, no. Two rooms are our hardest and the third is our Terrifying horror tier. Start at another venue and come here when you want a real test.

We are two people. Is it worth it?

Yes, and this is the venue for it. Both five out of five rooms were built for small teams, so a pair gets a full game rather than a thin one.

Is there parking?

On site, which makes this the easiest venue to drive to and the natural choice if you are coming from the south east.

Which HackSaw is this one?

The remaster of the Hawthorn original, rebuilt from the ground up with a decade of technique behind it. Harder and more relentless than the original, and it stands entirely on its own if you have not played that one.
